Salt & Straw’s Dwanta Holiday Campaign: Packaging Design

Salt & Straw uses ice cream as a platform for innovation. Each month Salt & Straw showcases a series of flavors that spark wonder, curiosity, and dare the ice-cream amorists to explore the ever-evolving menu over and over again. Founded in Portland, OR in 2011, the company has grown to 30+ shops in 5 states as well as a direct-to-consumer e-commerce business that ships nationwide.

During the Holiday season, Salt & Straw collaborates with Dwanye “The Rock” Johnson and his tequila brand Teremana to create limited edition holiday themed flavors. These flavors are marketed using Dwanye “The Rock” Johnson’s holiday alter-ego “Dwanta Claus”.

In 2021, I had the opportunity to design custom packaging for the Naughty & Nice Limited Edition Dwanta Holiday Flavors.

The design prompt for the packaging was vintage Americana Christmas. My references included Betty Crocker Cookbooks and mid-century ornament packaging.

Dwanta’s Advent Calendar Design

In 2022, Salt & Straw created the first ever frozen advent calendar in collaboration with Dwanta Claus. Five freezers filled with 12 different pints of “secret” ice cream were auctioned off for charity.

I was tasked with designing vinyl stickers to go on the front of the freezers, packaging for each flavor that displays the day it’s meant to be opened, a booklet that contains an advent flavor journal and nutritional info, and a website page that revealed the name of each flavor on each corresponding advent day. I also directed the photoshoot and collaborated with my team on the marketing materials.
